Running successful music programs – their in-school activities, outside school activities, and more – at Maple Grove Senior High takes many volunteers. Get to know our voting board members below!
Board meetings are held monthly via Zoom. Discussions include upcoming events and preparations that are needed, results of past fundraising efforts, and more.
I have 2 daughters who have both been involved in MG music programs. I initially joined Booster meetings to find a way to give back and meet other parents.
My freshman daughter plays violin in orchestra, piano in Jazz Band and percussion in Crimson Sound. My older daughter was part of jazz, marching and regular band.
I was in band through high school and found my core group of friends there. I was encouraged to join band by my 4th grade teacher and have always been grateful for that nudge.
The people! We have a great board, amazing Directors, terrific volunteers and a wonderful group of kids that we get to help support. The MGSH music community is exceptional.
Joining the MG Music Booster board was an easy decision: I love all of the people involved! From the directors to the parents to the students, it is such a fun and rewarding experience to be a part of. In 2015, my husband Eugene and I attended our first Music Booster meeting, and we have been involved in some way ever since.
Our daughter Gloria is a senior this year and is a member of Crimson Harmony and Crimson Winds. You can also find her on snare drum with the marching band, Crimson Sound, and Grove Area Percussion.
How did music impact your life when you were in school?
Many years ago, I was also involved in band, choir and theater. Those experiences brought me so much joy and built my confidence as a teenager. Music was everything to me at that age: making mix tapes for my friends, exchanging new CDs, and dancing at the small town ballroom to cover bands. As an adult, I am always listening to music and I love attending concerts
What is your favorite part of being on the board?
The best part about volunteering in the music programs is definitely the students! These young adults work so hard and are an inspiration to me. Their energy is good for the soul; getting to know them is truly a gift.
Why did you decide to join the board?
I had attended a couple of the board meetings and when this position opened up, it seemed like a natural fit. It is a wonderful (and easy!) way to be informed and to support the staff and musicians in our high quality music programs.
What does your musician do in Crimson Music?
Our son, Christopher (Topher), is a senior this year and a percussionist in band. He participates in Crimson Winds, jazz band, GAP, marching band, and the pit for musicals. Our daughter, Katherine, played the flute in band while at MGSH (class of 2022).
How did music impact your life when you were in school?
I played the clarinet from 5th grade through most of high school, including pep band. Music was a great outlet for me and provided an environment that helped me develop lifelong skills and friendships. I continue to be a strong supporter and enthusiast of the arts (in all forms) to this day.
What is your favorite part of being on the board?
Honestly, it's the great people that make up our board! It is a minimal commitment with a big impact, and we have fun doing it. This is one of the volunteer roles I've enjoyed the most in my years as a parent in our district.
